June is Acne Awareness Month, and C’est Moi is striving to help you better understand the type of acne you have and what might be causing it, plus treatments and holistic life choices that can help heal and prevent further breakouts.
What kind of acne do I have?
In general, acne falls into one of two categories: non-inflammatory and inflammatory. It’s important to understand which kind of acne you’re dealing with, because that will affect the course of treatment.
Non-inflammatory acne is generally:
What helps non-inflammatory acne? Regularly cleansing and exfoliating with a physical cleanser (we recommend our Clarify Cleansing Scrub) or a chemical exfoliant (salicylic acid), which can be found in our Clarify Blemish Treatment Pads for Acne.
Use a clarifying mask with oil absorbing ingredients such as charcoal clay weekly to clear excess build up in the pores, like the Purifying Charcoal Clay Facial Mask, which also doubles as a spot treatment.
Using fragrance-free skin care and frequently washing your pillowcase with laundry detergent can also help prevent non-inflammatory skin clogging.
Inflammatory acne is:
What can help inflammatory acne? These types of breakouts are generally much more painful and challenging to deal with than non-inflammatory acne. It’s recommended that you consult with a dermatologist when dealing with inflammatory acne, especially if it’s reoccurring, to develop the best treatment plan.
In general, if you’re struggling with an inflammatory acne breakout it’s important to limit touching your face, and never pick breakouts.
Using ingredients like Aloe and Chamomile can help to calm irritation and discomfort from inflammation, as well as a cool compress. Try our Soothing Cucumber & Aloe Gel Facial Mask.
Things to Do to Prevent Acne Breakouts
While not all acne types can be prevented or avoided, there are certain minor changes we can make to our environment and behaviors to create a better environment for our skin.
Prevent breakouts by:
If you’re struggling with acne, know that it’s not forever. While it can feel mentally and physically painful, you are not alone and you are beautiful! We hope this helps you better understand your acne and how to care for it.
]]>In the U.S. more people are diagnosed with skin cancer than any other kind of cancer—combined. It’s the most common cancer worldwide, so it’s important that we protect ourselves early and often.
C’est Moi has rounded up some important facts about skin cancer, sunscreen, and the best practices for sun exposure to help best protect you from harmful UV rays.
Skin Cancer Facts
Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the world. It’s so common that one in five Americans will develop skin cancer by the age of 70.
The time you spend in the sun matters—did you know that having 5+ sunburns in your life doubles your risk of melanoma? The good news is–when detected early, the 5-year survival rate for melanoma is 99% which is why awareness and detection are so important.
When it comes to people of color, the long-held idea that having more melanin in the skin protects you from skin cancer is untrue. People of color have higher percentages of acral lentiginous melanoma (ALM, melanoma of the palms, soles and nail beds) than Caucasians, whereas superficial spreading melanoma is the most frequent subtype in Caucasians and Hispanics.
If you’re also under the impression that younger people can’t get skin cancer, while it’s uncommon, this is also untrue. Melanoma in children and adolescents accounts for 1-4% of all melanomas and 3% of pediatric cancers.
The best way to protect yourself from skin cancer is to follow best practices in the sun, including wearing and re-applying sunscreen, staying out of the sun for prolonged periods, wearing protective clothing and more.

Sunscreen facts
When it comes to sunscreen, not all products are created equal. Here’s what you need to know about how to keep your and our environment safe from harmful chemicals. The most important differentiating factor between sunscreen types are physical (mineral) and chemical.
Physical (or mineral) sunscreen sits on top of the skin and blocks the sun, whereas chemical sunscreens are absorbed into the skin and neutralize UV rays. Since 60% of what our skin absorbs goes into the bloodstream, chemical sunscreens are absorbed into our bodies.
Did you know? Sunscreens with an SPF of at least 30 block 97 percent of the sun’s rays, making it one of the most effective tools in your sun protection toolbox.
All C’est Moi Mineral sunscreens are a minimum of 30 SPF, and are formulated with non-nano zinc oxide, which is reef safe and protects against both UVA and UVB rays.
Best Practices for Days in the Sun
Summer days on the beach are lots of fun—let’s keep them that way by keeping burns at bay with proper sun protection.
Here are the most important things to keep in mind for sun protection, via Environmental Working Group:
We are proud to share that C’est Moi’s best-selling Gentle Mineral Sunscreen Lotion Broad Spectrum SPF 30 and Sunshine Mineral Sunscreen Lotion Broad Spectrum SPF 45 are both recommended as “Best Recreational Sunscreens” in the 2021 Sunscreen Guide by the Environmental Working Group.
In addition, our Tinted Moisturizing Lotion Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Sunscreen is perfect for someone looking for a little coverage and the Sunshine Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50 Face Stick is great for on-the-go and long lasting protection (awesome for the little ones)!

]]>Self-care is the simple act of taking time for yourself and doing things that make you feel good. Whether it’s reading, taking a bath, doing a face mask or doing crafts, these small actions make a big difference in our overall well-being, especially during the coronavirus pandemic.
In today’s post, we give you self-care ideas for when you’re feeling a little less than perfect. Remember, it’s okay to have a bad day—and it’s important to take time for yourself.
Self-care ideas for when you feel: ANXIOUS
Anxiety is extremely common during everyday life, so it’s understandable that stress amid the COVID-19 pandemic has the majority of people in the U.S. feeling some level of anxiety. The word anxious is described as “experiencing worry, unease, or nervousness, typically about an imminent event or something with an uncertain outcome.”
When you are feeling anxious, try a combination of the following:
Get some fresh air and exercise. Exercise is very important for mitigating anxiety. Moving your body decreases muscle tension and shifts your energy and attention to something else.
Take a bath. Warm water and aromatherapy can be extremely soothing, and they come together perfectly in a bath. Leave electronics in another room, light a candle, play some music and/or read a book.
Try a guided meditation. Deep breathing is very helpful for calming anxiety, and those that have a meditation practice will tell you how wonderful it is for handling stress. PsychCentral says “when you're meditating, you're intentionally focused on the here and now. Meditation also helps with anxiety because it quiets an overactive brain.”
Self-care ideas for when you feel: SAD
Sadness is the state of feeling sorrow. With illness and strife seemingly all around us in 2020, it’s normal to feel sad at times. In these moments, take some time for yourself to honor your feelings and move through it.
Write a list of things you’re grateful for. The practice of gratitude redirects our attention from negative thoughts to positive ones. There are always things to be grateful for, and when you force yourself to list them out, you actively acknowledge the good things in your life.
Watch a feel-good movie. Pick a favorite movie from your past and watch it under a cozy blanket. It’s important to pick one you already know you love, because you’ll activate nostalgia, a happy and powerful feeling of fondness for the past.
Make-up your mood. Lift your spirits with some make-up! We’re not sure why it works, but putting some effort and attention into your appearance can definitely shift your mood. Maybe it’s a little bit “fake it ‘til you make it,” but there’s nothing wrong with that. Grab that red lipstick!
Self-care ideas for when you feel: UNMOTIVATED / UNINSPIRED
Are you feeling tired of the couch, but can’t seem to get yourself off of it? You’re not alone—but you can do something about it! Here are some ideas to get your energy up.
Get some SUN! Vitamin D supports the health of the immune system, brain, and nervous system, so it makes sense that a little bit of sunshine can not only brighten your day, but can also spark some creative energy. Don’t forget to wear your SPF!
Color! Pull out the markers or crayons and get back to younger you! Coloring is a great way to activate your creative side by thinking with your right brain and doing something with your hands. Grab a fun adult coloring book from Amazon!
Have a dance party of one. Pump up the happy jams, and dance like no one is watching! As your heart rate goes up and your blood gets flowing, so do those feel-good endorphins. Dance for a couple of songs to jump-start your energy level.
Self-care ideas for when you feel: LONELY
Humans are social animals, so the 2020 realities of social distancing have taken their toll on people of all ages. If you’re missing your family and friends, here are a few ideas for how to show yourself (and them) some love.
Write some cards or letters. Everyone loves getting something unexpected in the mail! Channeling your energy into a card or letter to a loved one will not only bring you joy as you think about them, but it will also deliver the same to them when they get your letter. It’s time to bring back this thoughtful practice!
Sing. According to this writer at Psychology Today, “It’s almost impossible to feel lonely when you’re singing. I’ve tried it, and it works. Sing solo or let your favorite singer keep you company as you sing together.” Alexa, play Folklore by Taylor Swift.
Self-care ideas for when you feel: TIRED
It may sound obvious, but rest is an extremely important part of self-care. If you’re feeling exhausted, your body is trying to tell you something! Learn to rest when you are tired.
Take a power nap. “Just 20 minutes is all you need to get the benefits of napping, such as improved alertness, enhanced performance, and a better mood. Naps of that length keep you in the lightest stage of non-REM sleep, making it easier for you to get up and go after your snooze session,” says Sleep.org. Make sure to set that alarm!
Eat more often. What we eat and how often we eat can majorly contribute to our energy levels. Harvard says that “it's better to eat small meals and snacks every few hours than three large meals a day. This approach can reduce your perception of fatigue because your brain needs a steady supply of nutrients.”
Exercise. It may seem counterintuitive, but exercising can wake you right up by increasing the levels of oxygen in your blood as well as your circulation. Exercising also causes your body to release epinephrine and norepinephrine, hormones that can make you feel energized.
The Cornerstones of Self-care
The most important thing to remember about self-care is the main purpose, which is taking the time out of your day to honor your body and mind’s need for love. Taking time for yourself is NOT selfish. On the contrary, taking time for yourself allows you to show up better for others. Stay strong this year, and remember that we’re all this together.

]]>Vitamin D isn’t all bad for you—in fact, it’s good for your bones, immune system and mood. While Vitamin D is a good thing, the UV rays from the sun can be harmful, so it’s vital that proper suncare and protection is a regular part of our daily routine.
But sunscreen isn’t just for days spent in the sun. Sun exposure is the leading cause of premature skin aging, like dark spots and wrinkles, and can even contribute to skin cancers.
When you least expect it, you can be a target for sun damage, whether in the car for a long drive, or spending time indoors near a window. Even on gloomy days, invisible sun rays come creeping through the clouds, leaving you vulnerable and exposed.
In this blog post, we explore everything you need to know about sunscreen and protecting your skin while enjoying your time in the sun.
First, What Exactly Is SPF?
SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor, and it measures the level of protection from UVB rays, the kind that cause sunburn and contribute to skin cancer. UVB rays are present all the time—even on cloudy days—so it’s important that you wear an SPF of 30 or higher every day.
Mineral Vs. Chemical Sunscreens
It’s important to be aware of the difference between the two, as chemical sunscreens are much more harmful to both humans and the environment.
Yucky chemical sunscreen ingredients like Oxybenzone and Octinoxate absorb into the skin and pull in the sun’s rays. Worse yet, they contribute to environmental damage like coral bleaching. We don’t believe in harming you or our marine friends.
Mineral sunscreens aren’t absorbed into the skin—they reflect harmful UV rays and do not cause reactions in the skin. Avoid chemical sunscreen and look for mineral sunscreens that are formulated with non-nano zinc oxides, like all of C’est Moi’s suncare products.
What Is Non-Nano Zinc Oxide?
All of our sunscreens are formulated with non-nano zinc oxide as the key ingredient that guards you from sun damage. Physical sunscreens like our non-nano zinc mineral SPFs create a protective barrier on top of the skin that acts as a mirror reflecting harmful sun rays away from you with a hydrating and non-chalky feel.
Our non-nano technology means that zinc particles won’t enter into your bloodstream, making it a cleaner, safer alternative to chemical sunscreens. AND they’re reef safe!
Our mineral sunscreens are broad spectrum, which means they protect you from all of the sun’s harmful rays – UVA (aging), UVB (burning) and UVC (cancer).
Sun Safety Tips
Try to limit your sun exposure, especially during the hours of 10am - 2pm when the sun is most intense. Wear a hat and lightweight clothing to keep exposed skin protected.
Apply SPF of 30 or higher every morning and be sure to reapply throughout the day if you are in direct sunlight, in the water or sweating (every 1-2 hours).
Which C’est Moi Sunscreen Is Right For You?
Ready to jump on the mineral sunscreen train, but unsure where to start? Here’s some helpful guidance on all of our sun care products, which are recommended by the Environmental Working Group.

]]>This blog post will share tips for taking extra good care of your skin through the various seasons, plus how to take care of your mindset when you are dealing with a breakout.
Some Facts About Acne
Acne can feel extremely isolating, but it’s the most common skin condition in the U.S., affecting nearly 50 million people per year. The root cause of acne can vary from person to person, but the factors that can cause acne include:
Environmental factors and inflammatory breakouts are caused by something ‘outside’. For example, inflammatory foods, like dairy, can cause breakouts, as can environmental factors like humidity and mask wearing.
Depending on the level of severity, genetic and hormonal acne may be best treated by a dermatologist.
Skincare Through the Seasons
Our skin has different needs throughout the year as environmental factors change. Summer, in particular, is a time in which acne tends to flare.
People tend to break out in the summertime because the hot, humid weather means more sweating and oil accumulation on the skin. Ultimately, this means more food to feed acne and block pores,” said Joshua Zeichner, MD, in Byrdie.
In summer 2020, this is especially true, when we’re all wearing masks to protect ourselves and others from COVID-19. “Maskne occurs when sweat, skin oils, and bacteria are trapped on the skin while wearing your mask,” says Elizabeth Mullans, M.D., a board-certified dermatologist in Houston, Texas.
So, how can you best take care of your skin this summer? First, never forget the golden rule: wash your face! Cleansing is vital for washing away the dirt and grime from the day, and sweat or oils from the night.
Second, treat acne with exfoliation and acne treatment. Exfoliation is an important step in keeping breakouts at bay. We recommend exfoliating 2-3x per week, using a physical exfoliator like our Clarify Cleansing Scrub. Treat active breakouts with a salicylic acid treatment, like our Clarify Blemish Treatment Pads.
When we transition into cooler months, skin can be prone to drying out, which can also cause irritation and breakouts. Exfoliation is equally important during this time of year, and moisturizing is a non-negotiable step. If you’re prone to breakouts, try a lightweight non-comedogenic moisturizer like our Gentle Moisture Lotion.
How to Take Care of Your Mental Health During a Breakout
Breakouts can be extremely taxing on mental and emotional health. It can cause us to self-isolate and hide. We know—we’ve been there! So we’re sharing some of the most helpful tips for how to best care for your mental health when navigating an acne journey.

MYMY: I was working in the Mahalingaiah Lab during the Ovulation and Menstruation Health Study, and connected with Phyllis [Ellis, the filmmaker] during the project. She approached me with the idea of doing a project about the harmful culture of unsafe or untested products in the beauty industry. I was already doing research on how different toxins affect women's health, and so the Toxic Beauty documentary felt almost like an extension of that work.
MOI: What caused you to first become interested in toxic-free beauty products?
MYMY: I had a personal experience that forced me to ask myself what effects cosmetics had on my health. It forced me to look in the mirror and think about the real impact it has on me and my community.
MOI: What are some of the most surprising things you learned from your research on this topic?
MYMY: I was most surprised by how difficult it was to actually figure out what was going on with my body. There are myriad of obstacles that I likely would not have been able to get past without the help of the production team around me.
MOI: In the film, you turn yourself into an experiment by purging all your “regular" products for “clean” products and have your toxicity levels tested and compared. Can you give us some examples of what you stopped using and what you used instead? Also, What was the hardest part of doing this?
MYMY: It's less about the specific things that I've changed than it is about the intent and consciousness that I now put into organizing my daily routine. I’ve switched over to using brands like Overtone, which I think is a leader in the movement towards making products more health and environment-conscious.
Obviously, personal care products cannot feasibly be under the same scrutiny as drugs, and I do not think that companies should be pushed out of the market, but it is incredibly important that consumers are at least aware of the choices they are making.
MOI: What was your biggest “a-ha" moment after this experiment and do you still stick with a clean beauty regimen?
MYMY: I wouldn't call it an “a-ha” moment per se, but I think now I have an appreciation for how much of the personal care industry is fueled by money rather than actually catering to their customers. My daily routine now is certainly cleaner than it was, but I think there is still a place for most products and companies. It's most important that customers have as much information as possible, not necessarily that we only sanction certain products.
MOI: When you see friends and family using products that may not be “clean,” does it make you want to lecture them?
MYMY: I definitely feel an urge to let my friends know when I think a product is unsafe. I think many people would be making different decisions about their daily routine if they knew all of the information that is out there.
MOI: How do you think the beauty industry can evolve to make consumers understand the importance of using clean and toxic free products?
MYMY: The main thing that can and should change is transparency. It's too much to expect all beauty products to be fully tested, but if the public had all of the information accessible, there is no doubt that people would be making different decisions.
MOI: As a medical student, how do you plan on continuing to empower and educate the public about this?
MYMY: Being a medical student, I am in a unique position with access to not only a robust patient population, but also the healthcare infrastructure. As I continue in my career, my goal is to involve myself more in both the healthcare and private sectors, expanding the campaign for clean products as much as possible.
Wondering how you can impact change beyond the products you use?
Here are a few ways:
Tell congress to support safer cosmetics and use #BeautyMadeBetter on your social posts. Support the Truth about Talc campaign and the Ban Talc campaign and use #TossTheTalc.
Thank you to Mymy for sitting down with us to discuss the importance of clean beauty, something we’re deeply passionate about at C’est Moi. Want to make sure you’re only using the safest products? Search for them on EWG’s Skin Deep Database.
Broken out? There’s a mask for that. Feeling dry? There’s a mask for that too. Get a little too much sun? Yup, it’s handled.
While there are many masks out there we use and love, we are featuring three masks C’est Moi has currently available to you (SPOILER ALERT: there are more on the way!). Learn what’s in them, how often to use, when to use and hacks for how to maximize your masking!

MASK HACK: If you’re broken out, you can use 1-2x more as a spot treatment. Dab it directly on a pimple and let dry for about 15 minutes.
While Purifying helps with congested skin, it’s formulated for all skin types and provides a gorgeous skin detox for anyone!
REFRESHING
Papaya & Strawberry Seed Scrub Facial Mask
Exfoliation is an extremely important part of a well-rounded skincare routine. It clears away dead skin cells, which can clog pores and make your products less effective.
If your skin is feeling dry, the first place to start is exfoliating with Refreshing. Designed to hydrate and balance while gently scrubbing away impurities, this unique blend of papaya, sugar and strawberry seeds provides a refreshing treat to the skin.
We recommend you use Refreshing about once per week. After applying all over and leaving for ~15 minutes, you’ll use warm water and circular motions to gently scrub cheeks, nose, forehead, around the mouth and chin. It’s really vital that after you rinse your face, you moisturize.
MASK HACK: You can always use it in certain parts of your face that feel drier than others—including your lips! We love to use Refreshing as a lip scrub; simply place a dime sized amount on your finger, apply to lips and scrub in a circular motion for ~10-15 seconds. Rinse off with water.
SOOTHING
Cucumber & Aloe Gel Facial Mask
Simple, clean and oh so soothing! The unique combination of organic aloe, cucumber, and calendula in Soothing help to calm and hydrate all skin types. If you’re in need of a calming moisture boost for dry, irritated or inflamed skin, Soothing is your bestie!
We recommend you use Soothing 1-2 times per week. Apply all over face, neck and chest as desired. Leave on for 15 minutes, and follow with an even application of moisturizer to face, neck and chest.
MASK HACK: Put Soothing in the refrigerator at least 5 minutes before use for a seriously refreshing masking experience! The coolness feels especially calming on sunburnt or irritated skin
Double Masking and More
In general, masking 1-2 times per week is a good rule of thumb. If you're experiencing a breakout, we recommend masking 3x a week—and using all of our masks! You can get all three for less in the Mask Party set.
Looking to really maximize your masking experience? Double up! Broken Out? Try Purifying followed by Soothing. Dry Skin? Use Refreshing followed by Soothing. Oily skin? Start with Refreshing followed by Purifying.

Happy Masking, friends!

If you’ve ever struggled with a skin condition, you know that it can affect your total body health. But what about “sensitive skin”?
The term sensitive skin is universal in the skincare world. Whether you’ve seen it on a product label, magazine headlines, or used it in conversation while talking about complexion troubles, it seems that the phrase is pretty self-explanatory.
But what if we told you that most people have a misconception of what it really means to have sensitive skin?
In this post, we will discuss the real definition of sensitive skin, how to know if you have it, and the best way manage it.
What is sensitive skin?
According to Dr. Delwyn Dyall-Smith, Dermatologist at DermNet, “Sensitive skin is a lay term rather than a medical diagnosis. It is generally used to describe skin with reduced tolerance to the application of cosmetics and personal care products. In surveys, approximately 50% of women and 40% of men may report having sensitive skin.”
He says, “Sensitive skin presents in a wide variety of ways, like with subjective symptoms such as stinging, itching, burning, and/or visible skin changes such as redness, dryness, scaling, peeling, bumps, hives.”
While talking to Allure Magazine, Dr. Elizabeth Tanzi, codirector of the Washington Institute of Dermatologic Laser Surgery in Washington, D.C, said that "It's an overused phrase. People may be overusing their products, leading to irritation. Skin is also more prone to irritation in the cooler months, so don't take a reaction to the frigid temperatures as a red flag for skin sensitivity.”
So, while sensitive skin can be a serious issue resulting in redness, dryness, flaking, and rashes on the skin, those same symptoms can also be misconstrued as side effects of sensitive skin rather that the results of using products with ingredients that are irritating the skin.
It’s important to keep in mind that anyone’s skin can react to certain irritants, however if you frequently have issues with redness, flaking, itching or eczema on the skin, it could be a sign of an underlying condition—sensitive skin.
How do I know if I have sensitive skin?
Now we know that sometimes skin irritation from ingredients within skincare or makeup can mislead people into thinking they have sensitive skin. But you might be wondering, how do we tell if you actually have sensitive skin?
Here are a few at home tests you can try! First, brush your fingers across the side of your face with medium pressure, if the skin turns leaves a red like a trail after your finger, you have sensitive skin. If you have a darker complexion, and that test isn’t as clear, you know you have sensitive skin if most of the products you use on your skin causes consistent stinging or redness.
Our resident dermatologist, Dr. Greenfield, says:
How to treat sensitive skin
“Proper skin care requires a thoughtful and well-designed routine that is geared towards your individual skin type and needs. Skin care also changes seasonally and heading into winter months means more moisturizing, and usually a little less exfoliating, Dr. Greenfield explains.
She goes on to say “if you do have sensitive skin, the next step would be to determine exactly what products or ingredients are causing reactions. Common irritants and allergens are fragrances, preservatives, detergents, plants, metals, and textiles. When looking for basic skin care products, it is important to avoid ones that are made with common irritants and allergens such as parabens, formaldehydes, flowers, fragrances, and detergents. Look out for ingredients such as polyethylene glycol, paraffin, benzophenone, balsum of peru, and sodium laurel sulfate which are common irritants but also ones that are easy to avoid.”
If it seems like you’re checking all the boxes for sensitive skin, your first step is to consult a dermatologist, who can help identify the best treatment plan and medications. They also may recommend tips like these for keeping your sensitive skin happy!
C’est Moi products are thoughtfully formulated specifically for sensitive skin types. We test our products on over 250 humans that have sensitive skin to ensure that our formulations are safe for everyone to use. Who doesn’t love life without any reactions, irritation or breakouts?

WRONG.
We’re sorry to burst your bubble, but most of us are contributing to excess waste disposal, despite our efforts to live an eco-conscious lifestyle. For example, although 75% of America’s waste is recyclable, we only recycle around 30% of it.
However, there is good news. We’re here to help you understand how to recycle responsibly and effectively in order to contribute to a greener community!
Why is recycling important?
Recycling is becoming more of a global concern now that 18 billion pounds of plastic trash winds up in our oceans each year. To put this in perspective, it’s enough trash to cover every foot of coastline around the world with five full trash bags of plastic…compounding every year.
It may be hard to believe that our recycling efforts can make a real difference, but did you know that “a single recycled plastic bottle saves enough energy to run a 100-watt bulb for 4 hours. It also creates 20% less air pollution and 50% less water pollution than would be created when making a new bottle”?
Nine out of 10 people say they would recycle if it were “easier.” However, recycling can be easy and effective by making small adjustments in your life, just keep reading to learn out how!
Recycling Basics
There are many common misconceptions about recycling; one of them is that it’s simple. Recycling is not just throwing any and all plastic and glass items into a bin and sending it away.
While some recycling centers can handle many different types of plastics and glass, even without pre-sorting, very few can handle everything. What’s more is that every city has its own rules about what they can take, meaning depending on where you live, you have to recycle differently. With that said, the first step to responsible recycling is checking what your collection service accepts.
Now, you may be thinking, “What’s the harm in just recycling something, even if I don’t know if it’s recyclable?” Well actually, Self Magazine says, “if something that is not accepted ends up at the facility, it can clog up the entire system. This human error is causing big problems in the recycling industry.”
When in doubt, if something can be recycled or not throw it in the garbage so it doesn’t ruin the entire batch of recyclables with it.
Recycling Beauty Products
Sometimes it’s tricky to know what can and can’t be recycled, especially with products that don’t belong in the kitchen. But just like your jam jars, recycling plants will accept your glass-bottled beauty products as well. However, make sure you give them a good rinse first and leave the lid on when you toss it.
Plastic skincare tubes and shampoo bottles are some of the most common beauty containers we have lying around the house, so make sure you’re recycling them properly: leave the labels on, screw the lids back on, and remember to give the tubes a good clean!
Another general rule of thumb is to remove the pumps from any bottle before recycling because they often have metal springs inside that you can’t see, and those can’t be recycled.
We've all thrown a shampoo bottle or two in the garbage bin out of laziness, and we've all ditched a lipstick tube, unsure as to whether they are recyclable at all. However, if we all made small adjustments to pull our weight a little more, we could really make a difference.
Not only would less plastic end up in our landfills and oceans, but we'd also reduce our global energy consumption!
Here is a general list of tips to consider when recycling:
Acne is much more than a few adjectives and a relatable comparison. In this article, we’ll break down what acne really is, the different causes, and the treatments that will help you kick acne out the door!
How do doctors define acne?
Acne is more than that annoying pimple which won’t disappear. The Mayo Clinic defines acne as “a skin condition that occurs when your hair follicles become clogged with oil and dead skin cells. It often causes whiteheads, blackheads or pimples, and usually appears on the face, forehead, chest, upper back and shoulders.”
Although the severity of acne can vary, the signs and symptoms include: blackheads, whiteheads, pimples, or cysts.
Teens Health says, “Teens get acne because of the hormonal changes that come with puberty. If your parents had acne as teens, it's more likely that you will, too. The good news is that, for most people, acne goes away almost completely by the time they are out of their teens.”
While the reason acne appears depends on each person, dermatologists have been able to link the location of the blemishes to the general cause.
What are the different kinds of acne?
Now we know that acne is more than an annoying visitor, an ingrown hair, and even one pimple. However, there’s still more to the story. The location of your acne can tell you a lot about why it’s there and how to get rid of it.
In general, there are six different causes of facial acne including: genetics, bacteria, hormones, lack of sleep, cosmetics, and food.
Genetics play a large role when it comes to breakouts, but they’re not the end-all, be-all of your complexion troubles.
Although the likelihood of getting acne is increased of your parents had acne, Well + Good tells us ways you can keep your acne at bay: “Even if you are genetically predisposed to acne, it doesn’t mean you can’t influence the degree to which it affects you by making informed, healthy choices in your lifestyle… If you eat an anti-inflammatory diet, have healthy stress management techniques, and try not to touch your face all day long, you may keep yourself under the threshold for expressing that genetic predisposition.”
Bacteria is everywhere; on your phone screen, doorknobs, and definitely on your hands. Mixed with makeup, dirt, and sebum, this is a recipe for breakouts! Make sure to disinfect your phone screen and wash your hands multiple times a day.
If you’ve ever had deep, cystic pimples that hide under the skin and are painful to the touch, that’s a sign of hormonal acne. Caused by any changes in hormones including puberty, periods, or pregnancy, this type of acne can be difficult to treat.
Healthline recommends seeing a doctor if this is the case, they can prescribe medications to help balance hormones. Other natural remedies include tea tree oil, green tea, or salicylic acid, which you can find in our Clarifying Blemish Treatment Pads.
Stress and lack of sleep are also huge factors in facial acne. When we are stressed, that often contributes to lack of sleep, which together can cause blemishes. Make sure you’re getting plenty of sleep!
Time Magazine talked to Dr. Adam Friedman, an associate professor of dermatology at George Washington University, and reports “a stress-related hormone called CRH, or corticotrophin-releasing hormone, as one culprit (of stress induced acne). CRH can bind to receptors in the skin’s sebaceous glands, and that binding drives up the skin’s oil production — which can cause pimples.”
If you’re one to wear makeup, your acne could be coming from using the products with irritating ingredients. There is a chance you could be reacting to oils, chemicals, fragrances, or other harsh ingredients. So, try to void using makeup with harsh ingredients to avoid future breakouts. However, this type of acne is easy to treat! Try using cleaner, hypoallergenic products like those made by C’est Moi.
Our resident dermatologist, Dr. Nava Greenfield says, “Formulas with parabens and sulfates have a high reactivity rate, which means that allergic reactions can develop on the skin when in contact with these ingredients. C’est Moi, clean beauty for the next generation, creates gentle and effective products that are game changers for anyone who has delicate, sensitive or blemish-prone skin.”
Certain types of food can cause a lot of internal trouble in your gut, which often appears externally as facial acne. Foods with dairy, gluten, soy, or oil can mean bad things for the skin. If you think this may be the case for your acne, try cutting out these suspicious food groups for about 1-2 months!
The American Academy of Dermatology Association even states, “Consuming milk may contribute to outbreaks of acne. If you suffer from acne, try eliminating milk from your diet to see if it helps clear your skin.”
We understand how frustrating acne can be, especially when you don’t know what’s causing it or how to fix it. We hope this article helped you gain a better understanding of what acne is, why it happens, and how to clear it up!
]]>But becoming an ingredient scholar is easier said than done. If you’ve ever turned a cleanser or moisturizer over, you know that reading the ingredient list can feel like reading a foreign language.
We’re here to help you understand ingredient lists by explaining which ingredients you should avoid, what it means to be EWG VerifiedTM, and product tests you should be on the lookout for.
We hear the phrase “clean ingredients” a lot now a days, but what does it really mean?
At C’est Moi, using clean ingredients means we work with ingredients that are consciously harvested and produced to create products that are formulated without toxic and allergenic ingredients. Our decisions are based on science, data and the expertise of our partners at the Environmental Working Group.
Also, just because it comes from a plant doesn’t mean it’s clean or a safer choice for your skin. Some plants, whether or not they are natural or organically grown, can be toxic or cause allergic reactions within the skin on their own or once they are mixed together. It’s all about chemistry.
For starters, here is a list of the ingredients we will NOT work with because they can be harmful to the body and skin. Watch out for these ingredients when buying your skincare and beauty products:
Do you know what it means to be EWG rated?
It’s important to remember that an ingredient’s source does not always determine its safety. So, while using clean ingredients is a good starting point, the best place to ensure its safety is the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep Database.
The EWG (Environmental Working Group) upholds the strictest standards for your health by tracking the chemical safety of products and calling out the harmful ingredients. So, when something is marked with the EWG verification stamp, that’s an easy way to tell that a product doesn’t include any harmful ingredients.
All of C’est Moi’s products are EWG verified, which means we say “no way” to toxic ingredients. We keep healthy ingredients in our formulas while eliminating thousands of commonly used ingredients which may be linked to cancer, hormone disruption, sensitization of the skin and common allergic reaction.
C’est Moi also adheres to European cosmetic regulations as our baseline (which are WAY more strict than those in the U.S.), and then take our ingredient exclusions a step further. For more details about the EWG Verified program, please visit the EWG Verified site.
What is ‘product testing’ and why is it important?
We’re not done yet! Product testing is also an important indicator of whether the product you’re using is harmful. The FDA says, “Product testing is just one of the things a manufacturer might do to ensure the safety of a cosmetic product.”
C’est Moi third-party tests all of our formulas to ensure that we are delivering upon our mission and purpose. The below are just a handful of the major tests we perform to ensure the safety and efficacy of our products.
HRIPT (Human Repeat Patch Testing) SAFETY TESTING
Determines the product’s potential for irritation, sensitization and allergic contact.
PRESERVATIVE EFFECTIVENESS TEST (PET)
Preservatives are what keep us healthy and safe from unwanted bacteria that can grow inside consumer products. We only use preservative systems that are proven safe at necessary and effective levels.
SUN PROTECTION FACTOR (SPF)
This helps assure consumers that a product will protect them and their families from damaging sunrays like UVA and UVB rays in the way the label promises.
HEAVY METALS
We heavy metal test all of our products to verify that they meet or fall below established avoidable limits (TALs) and to ensure ongoing purity levels are met and that there are NO detectable levels of harmful heavy metals in our products such as lead, mercury, cadmium, antimony, arsenic, and polonium.
Do you support ‘Cruelty Free’ products?
Finally, it’s important to support products that are not only harmless to you and your skin, but also to animals. Animal testing is harsh and unnecessary, so check to make sure a product is Cruelty Free before you buy it, because being kind to animals is beautiful!
Congratulations ingredient scholar, you’ve made it to the end of our test! Next time you’re in the beauty and skincare aisle, read a product’s packaging with confidence using these helpful tips. Remember, your skin is precious so be gentle to it!
]]>Luckily, our resident dermatologist Dr. Nava Greenfield is here to share some helpful tips in our Simple 3-Step Guide to Beating Breakouts!
"Skin needs the support of high-quality ingredients to hydrate and protect against breakouts," says Dr. Nava Greenfield. Which is why she recommends using brands like C’est Moi, that are committed to using clean, non-toxic, cruelty-free ingredients.” This brings us to “Step 1” in our lesson!
Step 1: Avoiding harsh ingredients
In Step 1 of our guide, Dr. Nava Greenfield shares the importance of paying attention to the ingredients of skin care products you purchase.
“Formulas with parabens and sulfates have a high reactivity rate, which means that allergic reactions can develop on the skin when in contact with these ingredients,” she says.
This is especially important to keep in mind if you know you have sensitive skin. She also suggests checking to see if products are EWG (Environmental Working Group) rated.
Plus, make sure you’re using skin care products without any added fragrances. Added fragrances not only increase the likelihood of an allergic reaction, but they also include unnecessary chemicals that your skin is better off without!
Step 2: Cleanse and Exfoliate
Now that we’ve covered the basics of ingredients, we can move on to tackling the breakouts!
Spending all day inside and around a lot of other schoolmates, our skin can get really congested, which leads to breakouts. Therefore, we need to make sure were always on top of cleansing and exfoliating our skin.
“Using a charcoal mask can help prevent breakouts by exfoliating and hydrating, which keeps the skin healthy enough to fight acne. A great product for this is the C'est Moi Purifying Charcoal Clay Face Mask. Use once to twice a week (at night) to eliminate any unhealthy buildup throughout the week,” Dr. Greenfield suggests.
Step 3: Treat and Hydrate
During the school day, our skin can’t help but get oily and dirty.
“Keep facial cleansing pads in your school bag in case your face builds up sebum or oil during the day,” Dr. Greenfield suggests.
This is perfect for when you can’t help but rest your chin in your hands or head on the table periodically throughout the day, you have something to clear and cleanse.
Dr. Greenfield says, “C'est Moi Clarify Blemish Treatment Wipes have the added benefit of salicylic acid to remove sebum and excess cell debris, which can clog your pores. Be sure to use them right after working out as well as sweat can build up and clog the pores during this time.”
These are perfect for those of you involved in school sports as well because the Treatment Wipes will remove sweat, cleanse the pores, and are so easy to use and dispose.
When focusing on treating acne, it’s important to remember to moisturize the skin as well. If skin gets dehydrated from using too many acne products it can perpetuate acne! If the skin is too dry it will produce more oil, meaning more opportunity for acne to surface! Skin needs to be balanced and hydrated at all times.
Bonus Points!
In addition, make sure to wear sunscreen everyday! Acne medications can make the skin more susceptible to the sun’s harsh rays, causing redness, irritation, and sun damage. Our Mineral Sunscreen can protect against that!
We know that getting back into the swing of school again can be stressful and busy, so the last thing any of us wants are frustrations with skin and breakouts.
Worry about one less thing this school year with C’est Moi’s Gentle and Clarifying Skincare, formulated for young delicate skin like yours!]]>Sun protection is an essential step in your daily skin care routine all year round! Not only does it help protect the skin from free radical damage and older looking skin, it also significantly reduces the risk of skin cancer.
But, there’s more to sunscreen than meets the eye! In this post, we’ll talk about the meaning of SPF, mineral vs. chemical sunscreen, ingredients to watch out for, and application tips to make sure your sunscreen is doing the job!
SPF Talk
For most of us, sunscreen is a trusty companion that we can rely on for sunburn free summers and ski days without goggle tans. Yet despite our familiarity with the product, we still may not know how in the world it works. One word… (or acronym): SPF.
SPF stands for “Sun Protection Factor,” which is the measure of sunscreen’s ability to protect your skin from UVB rays. Most people assume that the higher the SPF, the better. While higher SPF does ensure longer sun exposure without damage, it doesn’t mean that you’re invincible or completely protected.
In fact, SPF only protects against UVB rays; the ones that cause reddening from sunburns, but not UVA rays which cause long-term damage and wrinkles. All in all, an SPF of 30+ is going to be your best bet. But, it’s most important to re-apply and stay covered!
Our resident dermatologist Dr. Nava Greenfield tells us, “Sunscreens are not meant to be effective all day long. They need to be reapplied every two hours and after sweating, swimming or contact with water, which can wash them off.”
Mineral vs. Chemical Sunscreen
There are two main categories of sunscreen that are FDA approved in the US: chemical and mineral.
While you may not understand the ingredient list on either bottle, mineral-based sunscreens:
Chemical sunscreens, on the other hand:
Helpful Tips
Chemical sunscreens can harm the environment around us by washing into our lakes, ponds and oceans and affecting the natural environments there. That’s why it’s important to choose a sunscreen like our eco-friendly Gentle Mineral Sunscreen, which Refinery29 has rated one of the most coral reef-safe sunscreens on the market.
Regardless of the weather or even your activities, make sure you apply sunscreen daily! Dr. Nava Greenfield suggests finding a sunscreen that feels good on your skin and that you enjoy putting on.
She recommends our Gentle Mineral Sunscreen, saying, “it’s as nourishing as it is light and gentle on skin. It helps soothe and protect skin with ingredients like zinc oxide, organic aloe, shea butter and cocoa butter, plus extracts of strawberry, kiwi and apple. Keep it in your bathroom next to your morning skin care products so that you don’t forget to apply it daily. Make it a habit so that you never apply makeup without first protecting your face from the sun.”
As we say goodbye to summer and transition into the chillier seasons, it’s easy to let our sunscreen game slip. But just like cleansers, moisturizers, and special serums, sunscreen is an essential part of a skincare routine. So this year, make sure to wear your sunscreen daily, reapply every few hours, and choose mineral formulas.
