5 Ways to Detox Your Life in 2020

We’re starting the new year and decade with a clean slate, emphasis on CLEAN. We’re clearing out everything toxic—from ingredients to people—and invite you to join us! Here are five easy ways to detox your life, anytime of the year!

Need help knowing what products are really “clean”? The EWG Skin Deep Database is an online guide with safety ratings for more than 78,000 cosmetics and other personal care products and more than 2,500 brands.

Clean Sweep
If there was anything we learned in 2019, it was to channel organization goddess Marie Kondo and eliminate the things around us that don’t “spark joy.” Toxic ingredients do the opposite of spark joy, so a great place to start eliminating is the products that surround you. Yes, this applies to your skincare and makeup, but also to a wide array of everyday products from cleaning to haircare. Watch for harmful ingredients such as parabens, phthalates and Benzophenone (often found in sunscreen).

Pro-tip: Start small! It can be expensive (and wasteful) to throw away and replace everything all at once. We recommend starting with whatever you use most frequently—i.e. Face cleanser, moisturizer, sunscreen, daily makeup, and body wash. You can get all of these from C’est Moi—all of which of EWG VERIFIED™. When you see the EWG VERIFIED™ mark on a product, you will know that the product meets EWG's strictest criteria for transparency and health.

Less Screen Time
Digital detox! A recent study showed that the more time young adults spent on social media, the more likely they were to have problems sleeping and report symptoms of depression. Another study found that teens are spending nine hours per day on their phones. This statistic is alarming, and it goes without saying that each of us can be spending less time on our phones.

Pro-tip: It’s easiest to replace a habit you want to break with another habit. Try a creative outlet that involves your hands—like learning to play the guitar, baking or drawing while listening to music!

Surround Yourself With Positivity
The people you surround yourself with can have a huge impact on your emotional and mental health. If you have friends in your life that talk behind your back, are negative, talk down to you, or simply don’t make you feel good, it’s time to say goodbye! This may sound hard or harsh, but the reality is that friendship is a gift—it’s given, but not a given.

Pro-tip: Invest more time in the friendships and relationships that do bring you joy. Quality, not quantity, is most important when it comes to friendship. Looking for a fun bonding activity with friends? Try our Sleepover Facial Mask Set for a self-care session that includes all skin types!

Shop the Perimeter
Eating clean is a crucial part of detoxing your life! But what is “eating clean” exactly? Simply put, eating clean is eating things that come from the Earth. At most grocery stores, these items can be found around the perimeter of the store, and not lining the aisles. Fruits and veggies are your friends, and should make up the majority of your diet.

Pro-tip: Smoothies are a great way to pack in lots of nutrients. Love to snack? Us too! Instead of reaching for chips, try nuts, beef jerky, popcorn or a protein bar (we love GoMacro!).

Water, Exercise, Rest, Repeat
When it comes to “detoxing,” there is nothing more important than drinking a lot of water. Similarly, it’s important to get regular exercise (3-4x per week for 20-30 minutes per day). Simply going on a 20-30 minute walk out is a great way to move your body, get some fresh air and a change of scenery.

Both drinking water and regular exercise help to flush the body of toxins. On top of that, getting adequate sleep every night supports overall health and wellness. Aim to get 8 hours of shut eye each night and wake up ready to take on the world!

Let’s start the new year feeling fresh and positive together by detoxing our lives in order to spend more of our time, money and energy on things that make us feel GOOD! Do you have more ideas for how to detox your life? Leave them in the comments!
